The Unfortunate Fate of the RMS Rhone
#history #disaster
No matter how far technology advances, man is still at the whims of the sea. Even in an age of iron hulls and steam power, a single error can render a very capable ship into a wreck on the sea floor. The RMS Rhone, state of the art at the time learned this all too well. Learn her story.

You neglected to tell us the real reason: that Dark Brandon was alive then and appeared out of nowhere to frighten the poor patriotic sailors to death, instantly. The explosion was from the boiler pipes (near the toilet or "head") catching alight all the boxes of classified documents (Brandon had stolen), stored in the hold 🙃

The captain must have had a brain dead moment or a bad case of "I can do this all by myself." He should have never been allowed on anything that floats even as a passenger for the rest of his life. His know it all attitude caused a lot of unnecessary loss of life. All the other captains saw what was coming and offered life saving assistance, but he refused them. His ego was bigger that the ship and more important than the lives of the crew. The poor families that lost their loved ones were put through a nightmare, which lasted the rest of their lives, and I'm sure of that. This particular situation just makes me furious. I'm sure he justified it in his little brain, but there is no justification for how he handled that situation. I doubt it, but I hope what he did and didn't do haunted him forever.

Thank you so much for coverning the Empress' story! Ever since I was a kid, I had an obsession with her history, mainly fueled by rage that she was never able to be grieved properly because of the war... I actually got to visit the Empress of Ireland museum in Rimouski twice, and I got to touch different parts of the glorious ship. My very first job choice was actually a diver, able to withstand the strong currents and icy waters of the St-Lawrence River and be able to visit the Empress. Of course, I never got to acheive that dream but I'd be lying if i said it wasn't still on my bucket list! I still keep a little shrine for the passengers and make sure that they are remembered to this day. Thank you again for sharing one of the most tragic events in maritime history (atleast in my opinion), and the story of her passengers. Edit: Captain Kendall was my first crush, to show you how obsessed I was

What's fascinating is how they could build massive ships to cross oceans with all kinds of tech and luxuries of the day with nothing more in the pilot house but a wheel, compass and accurate clock. The pilot house on great lake freighters were like little closets until the advent of things like radar, radios and gyrocompass's required more room.

2 corrections about the Great Lakes: While they are the largest freshwater lake system by area, they are not by volume: lake Baikal alone holds more water in it than the entirety of Great Lakes combined. Also, Lake Superior is not the biggest lake by surface area in the world. That honour goes to the Caspian Sea (which is a lake), which is bigger in surface area than, again, the entirety of the Great Lakes combined.

The truth is that Philadelphia was founded by Dutch witchmen who named the town after Delphi, home of the fabled but historically existent Oracle of Delphi. Philadelphia was, from its European rebirth, a center for shamanic and demonic rituals and spiritual experimentation. The U.S. military knew this, as the top level leadership relied on old world spiritual techniques such as “psychic intelligence”. By the time the ‘Philadelphia Experiment’ movie was made, the supernatural influence on our military was deeply covert and only known to a handful of top level men who rarely interacted with generals, admirals or most presidents for that matter. It is said that the Lizard King, aka Jim Morrison was conceived by his high ranking father and an unknown witch during a ritual passed down by none other than Alastair Crowley. Well, I’m rambling now but, you get the idea, the Philadelphia experiment wasn’t 100% factual, obviously, but owes it’s lore to actual happenings that left no trace with paper documents or other evidence, many missing or KIA soldiers were eliminated to prevent exposure and, yeah I’m gonna stop there.

Water most likely entered the cargo holds. With the cargo's nature, iron reacts with water, creating an acidic solution that can rip through hulls.
